| Thai Empress Restaurant |

So far, this is my favorite "Hole in the Wall" restaurant in Beijing. Good food, relaxed atmosphere and a great location if you feel like a little clubbing later. As mentioned before, it's not much to look at, but you will feel right at home. The prices are reasonable and I think the soups are very good. A super place to hang out with a few good friends.

| Beijing Home Delivery |
|
I just received my first delivery from Beijing Home Delivery and I couldn't be happier. I was turned on to the well-designed website by a friend and immediately had to try it out. My goods were delivered on time and in perfect condition. The website is in English and the owner is very friendly expat named Richard who is ready to bend over backward to make sure you are a satisfied customer. With a schedule like mine, this business is a godsend. Delivery is available anywhere within the Fifth Ring Road and the prices are very reasonable. Check out the website today and make your first order. I'm sure you'll be as thrilled with Beijing Home Delivery as I am.

| Water Bar and Restaurant |
|
Water Bar has a big future ahead of it in Beijing, its been designed to operate as a club and a restaurant. The owner has a creative vision for the space and brings a commitment to develop Water as a distinctive destination. There is an Italian syle veranda out back with a majestic view over the lake. I had the pizza which was of the thin crust variety and is a good as you will find in the Jing. As for Solana itself, its as if the developer lifted the construction blueprint from Newport Beach Mall in Orange County, South of LA- Unlike other malls here its an indoor-outdoor Euro setup which might require some fortitude during the dark winter months. Its a nice change from the status quo and a bold investment in a new style of retail..

Ditto! If this place was in other cities (don't have to go far) even in Shanghai, it would have closed a long time ago! The last THREE attempts (over a period of one year as I thot it needed time to mature) i tried this place out hoping to have a decent Sunday breakfast, they keep running out of "things" on the menu! And it happened at noon time! Now how can it be possible that you run out of "juice" or "tomoto" or breakfast items on the menu on a Sunday around midday??? Hmmm... Three strikes. You're out mate. Totally.

| MOSTO |
|
I had decent expectiations as I know the chef is quite good. The food was ok - I love foi grais but I was disappointed with the over-all experience. The service was a bit average and the concept is just not original. It seems yet another rip-off of the successful contemporary restaurants in Beijing. Why is it that no-one can come up with something new? I would rather go to the few restaurants that continue to do well than patronise establishments that are a poor imitation. When will people learn that you can't simply copy someone else's idea and expect to be successful. In its favor - Mosto's decor is nice (albiet almost exactly the same but in a different color as Salt - where the chef used to work I just leaned!). I left a little bit hungry - the portions are small and I was a bit mad that I had paid money to people that had obviously just copied someone elses idea. Oh well.

| Drum and Gong |
Forgive me, 2 stars. I went to Drum and Gong with high hopes but I found nothing but disappointment.
The decor is terrible. The food really SUCKED. Maybe we just ordered the wrong menu item. The appetizer-vegetable rolls tasted really plain and ordinary--nothing with any real punch or excitement. The main course-sweet and sour chicken had a really weird taste. The leek dish was edible but nothing spectacular.
Do yourself a favor, Do not go here!

Im not sure if i have seen a bigger all you can eat place in my lifetime, it takes 15 mins just to do a tour of it. The star draw is crab, which filled most diners plates when i was there. They probably wont make money on it but will do better on the other food. You need to pick and choose a bit with the options, the western food isnt too hot, but then there is TGIF for that, just as there is a better quality restaurant for all the various cultural offerings. However, nobody packs in more types of food than The Jag.period. Plus there is a lunch band playing light Chinese contemporary pop synth. Best part is the fruit bar and the desserts. Westin does a better spread but its twice the price. Ignore the naysayers below and have a go, you wont regret it

| Drum and Gong |

Drum and gong or Luogu serves up quite tasty and popular Sichuan fare. This time however I was disappointed to find that they remodeled the downstairs into what is now a mish-mash of different themes. Lamps are from Tibet, the wallpaper attempts to mimic old Beijing, and red brick shelves store western wines(!) and russian beer. The wait is still two hours even on a Sunday night! The menu is in English, it’s often packed, and it’s even open late (1AM on weekends). The rooftop closes early though. Come early to avoid the mealtime rush.

| Luga's Villa |
Lugaville – that’s right – a knock off on jimmy buffet’s famous song and an affront to the Saddle Cantina and the Rickshaw. I visited last night and although it’s not open in earnest, it will be a force that the highly priced Mexican food restaurants nearby will have to recon with. Why? Inexpensive prices, authentic Mexican dishes all served by attentive staff, that’s why.
Two floors – the first is a large space with pool table, bar, booth seating, and a stage for live performances. The second is an oddly furnished restaurant (furniture left over from French restaurant) that has lots of promise.
Draft beer for 15-20 and happy hour discounts that match the Rickshaw’s OLD prices (before the 15% surcharge).
Luga’s partners are Mexican. The chef is Mexican and as far as I can tell, she is sharp and knows her stuff. What she aims to provide is authentic Mexican fare. Try the guacamole – it’s tasty!
Hand made hamburgers bigger than you can imagine for RMB 45. The burger comes with fries, and other sides that would make any Wisconsinite proud.
Luga knows customer service. He knows how to get people together. His staff is helpful and generally friendlier than at the higher priced alternatives.
The location is a bit hard to find but my guess is it won’t take long to catch on.
It's still early. Only time will tell how this restaurant does but it certainly has promise.
The Mexican restaurant scene just a lot more interesting…

This is another great place to sample the best of Beijing's sweets. Try the almond tofu served with watermellon balls, or go for some of the more adveturous desserts. I've promised myself next time to try the papaya with frog fat! Sounds pretty different! Though this is not a cheap place, you really do get to taste superb desserts. Service is friendly and fast. Bon appetit.

This place blew me away! I'd been walking all morning in the sun and was looking for something refreshing, when my girlfriend frog-marched me into here. These guys know how to make authentic Beijing sweets. Try the Almond tofu!!! The taste sensation verged on the mystical. All of a sudden I was chilled and wanting more and more. If you've ever been to Sicily the almond tofu might remind you of latte di mandorle or almond milk. It's just the best thing for a hot summer's day. The interior is pretty spartan, but on upside the have posters telling you all about the history of the sweets you're tasting. Being just across the road from Houhai makes this place very popular and rightly so!

Situated a short walk from Houhai lake this unassuming place is one my favourite restaurants in town. I tend to come here to quench my meat cravings. They do a great selection of grilled meat, from chicken wings that are some of the best in town, to a super grill-your-own lamb and pork. I took a friend from London and she was left speachless by the amount of food our waiter brought to our table. If you're not too keen on the meat, then ask for the harvest platter and feast your eyes on all kinds of raw vegetables asking to be dipped in tasty sauces. Service is fast and staff are always willing to listen to my lousy Chinese. Expect to pay around RMB100 for a meal for two.

Good homestyle food – the kind I had when I first arrived here in Beijing years ago. Very casual atmosphere. Basic wooden furniture tucked into a tiny space. One of the reasons this restaurant has made a name for itself is serving the biggest baozi in Beijing. Only in the south have I seen bigger. The other is simply quality of food. The walls use shelves lined with jars of pickled garlic to create a traditional feel. The vinegar is an excellent dipping sauce for baozi although too much will make you sweat and smell like garlic.

| Panino Teca |
Pinino Teca is now in “The Village!” My favorite sandwich joint is now directly across from Ciro's Pomodoro. Upping Boccata with sandwich quality, salad portions, and consistent professional service, Pinino Teca is definitely my favorite choice for light and healthy fare in Sanlitun. For a working lunch, take your laptop and surf their wireless while munching on a massive sandwich. For a wonderfully casual evening, grab a friend and order the chicken salad with olive oil, a huge sandwich, and a bottle of wine. Walk over to the new Eden Juice Bar afterward for a really yummy alternative to Starbucks Frappacino. Another alternative is to stop by here on the way to the Megabox movie theatres.
My only complaint, I wish we could put the chairs and tables outside…
