I dined at the dinner buffet last week and there were two things that stood out about the Grand Café: first, the food is excellent and second, the customer service is beyond reproach. Let me tell you why. I did my usual starve myself the entire day so I can justify serving after serving of every food imaginable. There is so much on offer and because this dinner costs slightly more than usual, I tell myself it’s okay to eat until I nearly pass out. This evening was no different. I was well into the evening at the homemade ice cream bar wrestling over whether to add another biscotti wafer to my mountain of ice cream when in walks the fuwuyuan with a leash in her hand and a large man in drag and high heals on the other end wearing a dog collar. I grew up in San Francisco and believe me sights like this can become commonplace especially if you walk through the Castro on weekends. But this was different. We were in a 5 star hotel 1700 miles from the warm and masculine arms of the Castro. I immediately felt bad for the fuwuyuan. Poor lady had to walk this gigantic man around like a dog from the salad station to the cheese cart, and finally over to the sushi stand before returning to his tiny table on the corner. This and she must maintain her composure as if she were performing a menial task like delivering an extra napkin or refilling the bowl of wasabi. I had to talk with her. When nobody was looking I snuck over and asked her what was going on. Was he rich and eccentric? A movie star in character? A secret shopper? Or, was he just a large man dressed up like a lady refusing to walk anywhere without a fuwuyuan leading him around with a leash?
The fuwuyuan candidly said that this guy comes in once every few months and demands to be lead around by his leash. He didn’t stay at the hotel, they didn’t know who he was, but he came back from time to time and the entire staff knew what to do when he did. In the end, none of my questions were answered. Even if she did know, she was politely not telling me.

Five star hotels see all kinds and they have to prepare more than any other to accommodate the different shapes, sizes, and in this case, preferences of their customers. I’ve known this for a long time as every once in a while I’ll do something to test just how far they will go to satisfy my meager requests. This was on another level. I have never seen such an orchestrated display of, “the customer is always right.”
Hats off to the entire team at the Grand Café! From the GM on down to the server, they didn’t miss a beat and should be applauded for their efforts.
