I've walked by this place many, many times and never gone in. I was missing out and will definitely be back for more. My friend who recommended the place ordered up sparkling wine rmb 380 (freixenet) for all of us. While I am normally not a fan of sparkling wine drinks, this one was sweet and tempting.Their fried mushroom starter was good.
The decor was classy and well-maintained, nothing looked dusty or out of place. I sat at the bar at the far left and the only jarring moment was when the ice machine rumbled to life next to me. I didn't check out the back room, but could hear an event going on.
Lastly, the bartender was super attentive (but not overly so). He made the drinks with flair but not taking too much time to show off. |

| This is hands down one of the best clubs in this city (especially now that white rabbit is no more... sniff). The location is awesome (lakeside view) the setup is diverse - you can hang out in the lounge and sip on an excellent Mochito while waiting for the action to start in clubroom downstairs. Musicwise its a welcome and positive seperation to the gongti/sanlitun mashup which I honestly can't stand anymore. If you just arrived in Beijing and like vics and mix and trix and the china dolls, don't go to Obiwan. If you prefer a little more alternative scene, with real DJs and real alcohol, then this is the right place for you. As always I'm not happy with the espresso - though the owner promised me to work on that. |

I've always been slightly conflicted by Obiwan. If you're in the mood for sipping so-so drinks with a lake view, it definitely beats anything else clutching the banks of Houhai by virtue of the fact that it's isolated, a bit quieter, elevated, and you can get there straight from a subway stop.
But it never quite comes through on its promises. The drinks sound super (I remember some absinthe-gin concoction that I was once excited about), but end up being quite nauseating and poorly made. And the crowd is never quite tolerable, full of out-of-work DJs messing with the sound system. The terrace view is nice (although really only from that one table that hangs off of the deck), but the inside levels are either hot and stuffy or depressingly lonely.
My advice is to get there early in the evening, before the good spots are taken and the service becomes intolerable. If you order enough right away, you might be able to isolate yourself with the views and cold beer through the night. |

lots of expats here, many of them german. it's got a lot going for it, including: big dance floor, multiple bars, a comfortable roof, great location on the lake(albeit a bit hard to find for the uninitiated).
drinks are well priced and they show movies on the roof when the weather is good. |

went to Obiwon last year.
A friend of mine was having a party there, and invited me for it. t'was horrible experience. was like being back in one of those college bars in the US. Somewhere between a college bar and frat house, having a summer party.
the only difference was, that most of the crowd was about 40+ (just like the townies in the college bars).
The JD Coke was watered down and expensive. Bathrooms were filthy and broken.. It took about 15 minutes to get a drink, cuz the bar staff was too busy talking to each other (even though the place was quite busy).
I am not too particular on the whole Houhai kinda experience, so maybe thats one of the reason why the place didnt match with what I had in my mind.
Music was kinda ok, nothing amazing. Hopefully it should have improved this year... |

| This little gem is not the easiest bar to find, but well worth the effort. I come here for the rooftop seating and the relaxing views of the lake. The people behind this hip three storey bar/club offer a chilled out atmosphere and quality drinks, while organizing great themed nights. I like Obiwan because it’s self contained and has enough great features to keep you coming back for more and more. Unlike Houhai bars staff here know how to pour a drink while not charging you an arm and a leg for fake booze. Shots go for RMB15 while the excellent cocktails go for RMB30-45. |

| Club Obiwan has an interesting concept going: restaurant during the day and chilled bar in the evening. I have even gone to see a few movies there. The restaurant, bar, movie, dancing schtick is a bit scattered however they have done something right becuase my friends love the place. I admit liking it to otherwise I wouldn't be writing this review. What I like best about Obiwan is the three floored house in which it is housed. The hutong in which the house is situated. And, the decor inside (different with each floor - first is different from the second and so on). The rooftop patio is amazing with great views of the lake. |
