For the price, the best tonkatsu I've ever had! Perfect for poor, Chinese-language students looking to gorge.
I was in Wudaokou looking for this old favorite last month but I found that it has now been replaced by a clothing store!
Anyone know the whereabouts of a new location, if any???
200912: I am happy to report that after a couple months of renovation, they are back in business! The food remains as satisfying as it was, and they have added more seating in a cafeteria-style setup. They also offer delivery service, so for those residing in Wudaokou, late night cravings can be satisfied with a large, thick, juicy pieces of Tonkatsu & Curry =)... still waiting for them to open a shop in the city! |

This was one of the first places I ate at since moving to WuDaoKou. A friend told me about this place so i decided to try it out one night.
The inside is nothing special, but not much bad about it either. Tables and menus could look a little cleaner though I thought.
The staff here was very friendly and attentative. There were a few other people at other tables when I came here to eat at dinner time. Looking at the menu I noticed it was pretty much either curry or the Tonkatsu, hence the name of the restaurant. The menu had pictures of the food which is always nice...when done correctly. I noticed all the pictures of the curry were the same and the pictures of the tonkatsu looked the same, despite there being more than 5 kinds of each.
The wait for the food was about 10 minutes. I ordered the combo and it came with some pickled vegetables on the side, a nice addition I thought. I felt the price of it was a little steep at close to 40 kuai, but the food was good. Sometimes I felt the Tonkatsu was a little bland, but the curry sauce made up for it.
Overall, the food was good and satisfying. I will probably be back again sometime soon! |

have to admit, if it hadnt been for a friend of mine winning some contest that got her a gift certificate to eat here for free as many times as she wanted for a whole month, I would have never even thought of walking in.
the place looks dingy, and smells of fried food, which is the main fare on the menu. to be expected, of course, but nevertheless unpleasant (at least for me). also, the tables are covered in those plastic "tablecloths" that are one of my biggest pet peeves... they are always nasty-looking, no matter how clean they are.
that being said, the food is quite good. yes, its mostly heart attack inducing, but tasty.
the curry is spot on, and the tonkatsu is my favorite here so far.
the service is, well, chinese, and really dont care much about you. but your food comes out almost as soon as you order, so hey... you dont have to stick around for long.
the prices are cheap for the huge portions (30RMB average),everytime I had to take some home.
its usually very crowded at lunch and nights, mostly japanese students.
I recommend it for cheap, quick food. |

Tonkatsu and Curry Rice is an icon of hidden treature at WuDaoKou. It isn't the kind of restaurant you want to dine out with your new gf or bf, but definitely you'll love to eat there with your mates or your gf/bf after you guys've been going out for a while. It's so simple and casual with posters and flyers sticking all around. Band players always hang out there after having practice since it opens till late night.
For me, I just love its well prepared curry rice! |
