There are many decent restaurants in Beijing, but few very great ones, this is one of the few that nail everything, service, environment, and food.

The setting is a old style hutong building that has been renovated to house the restaurant, but done in a very dignified sort of way. The food is described as Manchu style, but very different from what you think of when talking about Dongbei food, instead you get dishes that are sweeter, but still hearty.

There are many favorites here, the shrimp, the venison stew, the sausages, the shanyao, and the paozi rou are all excellent. Pao zi rou is a kind of deer that is native to northeast China and is very rarely found on menus (and when it is, its very rarely paozi and instead your typical deer), though this place serves real paozi rou at a very reasonable price (I think its around RMB45 or so).

This is a great place to take a guest or a date, the key is having a larger group, as there are no reservations for parties of less than 4 (I believe 4 is the minimum, though it may be 3, in any case, a party of 2 can't get a reservation). This place is extremely popular and if you want a Friday or Saturday reservation, I'd call 2-3 days in advance, though its definitely worth it.

Where to begin? I'm giving this restaurant 5 stars and would give it more if it was possible! Had one of the better chinese meals that I ate ever and will be back for more and more! How's that for an endorsement?
The venison stew (about 60 bucks) is out of this world, the duck was so tender (about 50 bucks). Pumpkin cakes rocked the house and just about every other dish we had on the table was swallowed.

It's hidden behind the LG towers and can be tricky to find but it's well worth it.

beware that unless you make a reservation for a private room ( 12 people with 1200RMB minimum consumption) you will have to wait for your turn. They also do not accept reservations past a certain hour (6 or 8 p.m. depending on who you ask). There was a queue of 11 parties waiting to be seated on a friday night at 8:00 pm. It is that good.

Do yourself a favor, step away from that gongbao jiding and go eat some real manchurian cuisine.
