| The alleyway that this shop is located on is crammed with a lot of interesting, but ultimately, uninteresting things to purchase. Buy them and they will be up for sale in next year’s ‘yard sale’. There are a few exceptions and NLGX is one of them. The shirts, shoes, bags, etc, have interesting and thought provoking designs that are as cool to wear here in Beijing as they would be back home. Prices are the same as in the West however so is the quality so before you complain that you can get a t-shirt elsewhere for less, remember that you a) can’t and b) shouldn’t. In the end, you get what you pay for. |

Nanluoguxiang is home to a ton of boutique shops but high rent and stiff competition has made it a sort of revolving door for businesses. T-shirts shops do well. Among them, Plastered 8, NLGX, Grifted, Passby (guoke) have stood the test of time. Navel is a relatively new addition and seems to be making some traction. Only Plastered 8 and NLGX have products that I would (and have) purchase.
NLGX used to be more of a café than a t-shirt shop but with their newest renovation that has changed. The coffee machine that was once the center of NLGX “Café” was replaced with a high-fashion casual clothing boutique. NLGX calls itself an “independent apparel brand and design community.”
Their T-shirts and designs are original and up to Western standards. NLGX also offers products by Huiyi to include the popular red and yellow (“xi hong shi ji dan”) colored shoes and tracksuits. Original designs, varied products, slick packaging and cool owners make NLGX one of the businesses to watch.
It’s worth pointing out that NLGX also works to promote social and cultural organizations based in Beijing. Check out NLGX.ORG for more.
My guess is that NLGX will be opening up a new store in the near future. Houhai’s yandai xie jie (烟袋斜街), Wu Ying Hutong (五道营胡同), or another up an coming area? Only they know.

How do you avoid starting another café in Beijing ripe with the same old banalities? You add gelato, right?
NLGX, located at the northern end of Nanluo, gave it a shot. Unfortunately, when I sampled their product, I felt as though I was seven again, eating old Brigham’s ice cream that my mom had scraped the freezer burn off of.
The gelato isn’t enough to draw a crowd but the friendly service, oatmeal raisin cookies, and cool T-Shirts for sale pick up the slack. If you’re a Nanluo fan you will appreciate the 不拆-don’t destroy-T featured on the display rack.
All those looking for good wifi and pumpkin muffins should consider this modestly priced cafe as an alternative work space.

On a tip-off I decided to head to this cafe/design store for a spot of lunch and to determine if it passed muster as an alternative work location(just need wifi, espresso and phone). Pleasingly the cafe was fairly quiet and the wifi worked a treat - even on the rooftop. There are 3 sections to NLGX - the front, the rear and the rooftop - none of which is particularly large, but the place does feel very homely and comfortable.
The staff were really friendly and spoke good english. They design their own t-shirts and a few other things, so you can also do a bit of shopping if you feel inclined.
They have a limited amount of food available - cookies, sandwiches and salads(the later 2 brought in from Vineyard cafe I believe), but have a good selection of beers, decent coffee and chinotto too!
If you're in the Nanluo area, then this cafe is a nice addition to all the other cafe's in the street. |
